iFind Research

Our new iFind Research service is now live.

iFind Research enables you to search across a wide range of information services (e.g. databases of journal articles, books etc).

You can access it at: http://ifind.swan.ac.uk/ or from the LIS home page (it’s the top item on the Digital Library menu option).

Following on from a long period of consultation with students and staff around the university we have designed a service which aims to meet your needs as follows:

1)      A ‘find an item’ service which takes an author/title of something (e.g. journal article, conference paper, thesis etc.) and aims to find a copy that can be accessed (may be online, but could also be a print copy in the library). This service will save time and money by finding copies of items on reading lists, in bibliographies etc.

2)      A ‘find something on a topic/subject’ service which aims to help you with an assignment e.g. essay, presentation or a research project. It can help locate relevant references on a particular topic/subject.

3)      A favourites feature which can save details of items found in searches to refer to later or to export by e-mail, or to a reference manager like Endnote.

We’ll be working to further improve iFind Research – if you  would like to make any suggestions, please e-mail  them to information.systems@swansea.ac.uk

YouTube 5th Anniversary

YouTube celebrates its 5th anniversary this week: http://www.youtube.com/FiveYear

Here are some recommended YouTube ‘academic’ favourites.
Did you know that YouTube EDU has a collection of films from universities.

Key organisations which have YouTube sites where you can view promotional videos, discussion sessions and interviews include
The World Bank
10 Downing Street – get the latest from David Cameron!
EU Tube – the European Community

But remember that YouTube is not the only good place for finding online film. We also subscribe to Newsfilm online. This has access to over 3000 hours of newsfilm clips taken from the archives of ITN/Reuters.

SCONUL Access – borrow from other HE libraries

Are you a member of staff or research student ?
Are you registered as a full time postgraduate or a part-time, distance learning or placement student?

SCONUL Access is a reciprocal access scheme, granting borrowing privileges to many types of library users working or studying at participating higher education libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

SCONUL Access provides borrowing privileges for most:

  • academic staff on open or fixed term contracts
  • postgraduate research students registered for a PhD, MPhil or similar qualification
  • part-time, distance learning and placement students
  • full-time postgraduates

Here’s what you do at Swansea University:

Download and print out the pdf application form.

Take the form to the Issue Desk in the library, or to the Miners’ Library for authorisation and you will be issued with a SCONUL Access card.

Take your SCONUL Access card and your Swansea library/ID card along with you. You will be issued with a library card, which will normally have the same expiry date as your SCONUL Access card. Your SCONUL Access card will be valid for up to three years, or until your course or contract ends, if earlier.
